What Are Dental Veneers?

If you have cracked, misshapen, or unaesthetic teeth or gaps in your smile, you may be a candidate for teeth veneers. Veneers are a thin covering that is placed over an existing tooth or teeth. The covering makes the teeth look like natural, aesthetic teeth.

There are multiple types of veneers made from different materials, but all achieve the same basic outcome – they whiten and strengthen existing teeth, making your smile shinier and healthier. Teeth veneers are commonly used in cosmetic dentistry, often amongst celebrities. They are a permanent procedure that will provide you with a perfect smile for years so long as you properly care for them.

Who Needs a Veneers Dentist?

Veneers are used for multiple reasons. These reasons are most commonly for aesthetic purposes but occasionally are to fix deeper concerns, such as weakened teeth. Teeth veneers may be suggested to you by your dentist if you have:

Stained teeth

Serious discoloration that cannot be fixed by common whitening practices may require the use of veneers. Veneers will be applied and create a pearly white appearance.

Weakened teeth

If your teeth are weak, veneers may be able to strengthen them. The material the veneers are made of is strong and can strengthen your teeth for a better bite and can prevent further damage.

Cracked or misshapen teeth

Cracks or jagged edges on your teeth can be fixed with veneers. The veneers reshape the edges of your teeth creating a smooth, perfect surface.

Gaps in your smile

Gaps from your teeth being unevenly spaced can be adjusted with the addition of veneers. The veneers are applied to existing teeth to minimize the appearance of the gaps.

Crooked teeth

Your teeth can be reshaped during the veneer application and then straightened with the applied veneers.

Types of Veneers at Redondo Beach Dental Center

At the Dental Center of Redondo Beach, our veneers dentist knows that not every patient is the same. That is why we provide multiple types of veneers to fit your needs and oral health. There are three types of teeth veneers that are most often used.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers may be the most used type of veneer. The porcelain used is shiny and white and easily blends in with your other teeth, creating a uniform smile. It is one of the strongest forms of veneers that are available and is recommended for those who need to strengthen their teeth as well as improve their appearance.

The veneers are stain-resistant, meaning that with proper care they will remain white longer than some other types of veneers. Porcelain veneers teeth also tend to last for a long time–up to fifteen years.

Composite Veneers

These veneers are made of a special type of resin, called composite resin. This resin is strong enough to somewhat improve the strength and white enough to improve the appearance of your teeth. Composite veneers are popular because they are a less expensive option than some other types of veneers. They are easily repaired and appear very natural once placed.

Lumineers

Lumineers

Unlike porcelain and composite veneers, Lumineers are a brand of veneers, rather than just a type of material. Lumineers are also made of a type of resin, just like composite veneers, but this resin is very thin and easily applied.

Lumineers require less time for application and minimal preparation on your teeth. They can also be removed, if necessary, while other types of veneers are more permanent. Lumineers are more expensive than composite veneers but are less expensive than the porcelain option.

Dental Veneer Procedure

The Dental Veneer Procedure

The procedure for applying teeth veneers is slightly different depending on the type of veneers that you get.

Number 1

Porcelain Veneers

With porcelain veneers, you will need more than one appointment. In your first appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth and determine how much will need to be shaved or reshaped before the veneer is applied. At the end of this appointment, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth to send off so that the porcelain veneer can be created. A temporary veneer may be placed.

At your next appointment, your dentist will remove your temporary veneers and begin the permanent application process. The lab-created porcelain veneers are bonded to your teeth and permanently set.

Number 2

Composite Veneers

The composite veneers require a similar but slightly less invasive procedure. Your teeth are examined and cleaned during your first appointment. Your dentist will also shave or remove part of your tooth, although this is typically less than what is required for porcelain veneers.

Your dentist may create the composite veneers in-office after shaping and measuring your teeth. They then will apply the veneer to your teeth with a bonding solution and secure it with a special light. In some cases, this only takes one appointment.

Number 3

Lumineers

Lumineers may take only one appointment, while some situations require two. At your first appointment, or at the beginning of your session, your teeth are examined and cleaned. Your dentist will help you select the right Lumineer shape and color for your teeth. Next, at your following appointment or later in the day, the Lumineers are applied to your teeth with a bonding solution. Then they are reshaped as necessary, polished, and cleaned!
